What is Sound Healing and how does is work?

Sound Healing is ever present and happening all the time.
Generally speaking it means receiving and absorbing beneficial frequencies that bring order, harmony and balance into the different layers of our being - that can be through nature sounds, certain frequencies like Solfeggio, music and instruments or voice. Sound Healing is also a practice used by our ancestors for a very long time. Ancient cultures like the Egyptians , the Greek, Aboriginal people of Australia, Tibetan Monks, African and American tribes all practiced Sound Healing by using instruments and chanting for prayers, ceremonies and healing. They all knew about the great healing potential of sound.

Definition of sound

Sound is formed when something is vibrating and causes the air around it to vibrate too. This vibration travels further and is called a soundwave. Sound needs a medium to travel through - that can be air, liquids and solids.

Our body consisting of 70-80% of water and its bones therefore is a very good conductor for sound and let’s us understand that we do not only hear with our ears but perceive sound with every cell within our body.

“Divine sound is the cause of all manifestation. The knower of the mystery of sound knows the mystery of the whole universe.”

Hazrat Inayat Khan

What is Frequency?

So when sound is created let’s say by an instrument in a soundbath, it creates soundwaves traveling through the air and our body. The frequency is the amount of soundwaves occuring within one second - measured in Hertz (Hz). For example a frequency of five Hertz equals five wave cycles per second. Our body constantly strives towards balance, healing and harmony. When certain frequencies move through our body it intuitively tries to adapt to the healthy frequency and „re-tune“ itself.

How sound influences our body and mind

Everything has a natural core frequency including every organ and every cell in our body.  If we understand that everything in the universe including ourselves is vibration we can get a hunch of the impact soundwaves can have on our body. When our continuously vibrating cells are healthy, the whole system is in tune. When cells are out of tune, the vibration changes. Parts of our body and therefore our whole system can be affected. This can be caused by diseases, external vibrations such as disruptive sounds, food but also internal factors such as emotions and your own thoughts. Since the human body is made up of 70-80% of water, it is a very good conductor for sound.

Healing sounds have the ability to bring our cells back into harmony and balance and retune our body. Different frequencies from certain instruments or the voice are like rolemodels for our body so it can try to match the vibration. This is called entrainment, a principle discovered by Christian Huygens in 1665 which you may know by the experiment of metronomes synchronizing after a while. The more powerful vibrations from one object will force the less powerful vibrations of another source to synchronize with the more powerful one. Same thing with our brainwaves - the frequency of the sound supports a change in our brainwave pattern and help us enter trance-like states where our natural healing abilities are activated. That way we can free ourselves from blockages on a physical, mental and spiritual level.

Jonathan Goldman, a pioneer in fields of harmonics and sound healing says that our own frequency is as important as the frequencies of sound in a soundbath. He says that the Frequencies plus the Intention enables Healing.  Our thoughts and emotions (energy in motion) also carry a specific frequency. By bringing in a clear heart-focused intention we can support our process and amplify the transformation.
